At Island Pops, our mission is to provide our customers with an authentic island experience using tropical ingredients in traditional and innovative ways always keeping the customer first.
Our owners, married couple Khalid Hamid and Shelly Marshall started Island Pops because like many who relocate to the United States, they were desperately missing a taste of their home country, Trinidad.
A Sweet Story
Shelly was sick in bed one day craving soursop ice cream. Khalid tried his best to locate an ice cream shop in Brooklyn that carried the flavor but to no avail, he decided to try the recipe at home. It wasn’t perfect by any means, but it was at that moment the couple realized that they had stumbled upon an opportunity. They figured there must be others in Brooklyn who craved authentic Caribbean ice cream flavors.
One year later after completing a prestigious ice cream course at Penn State University and entering (and winning!) their first local Business Plan writing competition, Island Pops was born in 2015. The couple dedicated themselves fully to developing the brand, selling in street fairs, food markets and public & private catered events. Fast forward, three years later, Island Pops opened its flagship store in Crown Heights Brooklyn in July 2018 and well the rest is history.
