A Mothers' Day dedication to our very own, Shelly
Island Pops would not even exist if it were not for my wife, Shelly. In 2014 she got sick with Chikungunya and was craving soursop ice cream that I couldn't find anywhere in Brooklyn. I decided to try my hand at making my own. It wasn’t perfect (yet) but it was the beginnings of what you know now as Island Pops, where we are dedicated to providing nostalgic Caribbean favorites, as well as innovative new flavors of ice cream, sorbets and popsicles. This Mothers’ day I’m paying tribute to Shells, my wonderful wife, for all she does for our family and our business.
Wifey loves sparkling wine. Shells is not much of a drinker, but when she does indulge, it is always with something sparkling. Any celebratory event, big or small, is marked with bubbles. From mimosas to bellinis and everything in-between, one sip and she relaxes immediately. As a treat for her, and all the others celebrating this Mothers’ Day I created some special limited edition flavours: Cherry blossom ice cream, as well as Mimosa and Passion fruit Bellini Popsicles! They will be available to order online and in store from May 1st to May 15th 2021.
Shells inspired these flavors with her relentless work ethic. She is so dedicated to Island Pops, that not even childbirth distracted her from getting the work done! It was to my suprise that the Brooklyn library staff informed me that my wife was so dedicated, that she was already sending emails the day after she had our daughter, Ella. They all remarked and were laughing about her borderline obsession with work. Shells is hard working, dedicated, and always planning for the future, even if it means sacrificing in the present. Shells, or “Wifey” as I call her, loves hard and is willing to do anything for our family. She sets the bar high and finds resourceful ways of achieving all her goals, and I am so in awe of her strength and determination. I thought up our Mother’s Day menu as a tribute to her-- the flavors that soothe her, because even superwoman needs a minute to relax.
Like my wife, I know so many women who go far above and beyond the call of duty, to provide safety, comfort and stability for their loved ones. I’m constantly amazed to see the boundless love and care that mothers have for their own children, and those who are like their own. I hope that this Mothers’ Day permits enough time for these truly special women to wind down and have a treat. I hope they feel appreciated and spend at least this one day doing something they truly enjoy. Perhaps some Cherry blossom ice cream or a Bellini popsicle at Island Pops sounds like a plan? Haha!
In our house, the kids’ favorite thing to do with Shells is their daily dance parties. Shells puts on her favorite pop songs, and they all dance together, whether it be in the morning, the afternoon or the evening. And when the dancing isn’t enough to shake off the day, a sparkling drink always does the trick!
